about

Sam's debut album, recorded under the name of Sam Shinazzi's C-Minus Project, released in 2003 as a co-release with Pop Frenzy Records and Steady Cam Records.

Shinazzi’s penchant for tales of love and sorrow have made Less Than Perfect Day an album that, no matter
who you are, you can find something to relate to. With that honest and real home studio feel, the feeling
behind every one of Shinazzi’s songs make this album even more brilliant with each listen. The C-Minus Project unfurls it’s tales of love, mourning, happiness and the longing feeling that surrounds a break up, which will strike a chord with anyone who listens to it. It’s beauty is in it’s simplicity, as Shinazzi, armed with an acoustic guitar, piano, honest voice and a few friends helping out here and there make it an intimate ride. With highlight tracks such as the string heavy House Near Bridge, that explores the feeling of finding someone, Moving Along, which echoes the feeling of a hard break up that just feels worse and worse, and the sad tale of lost friends which is Town Where You Were Born, there isn’t a lot of time for resistance. To simply palm this release off as acoustic mellow pop would be unfair, and a little ignorant to say the least as Sam Shinazzi’s C-Minus Project is so much more than pop – he wears his heart on his sleeve for all to see and hear. Expect big things from this man.

Lee Glynn

This land of slo-core, or post-rock, or simply sweet melancholic acoustic pop (pick your own currently
fashionable category title) is easily capable of falling into a rut of indulgent self-pity. Sam Schinazzi’s handy talent is, while much of this album deals with love in the process of being lost, or just remembered, it never falls into that well of just revelling in the hurt being felt.

Hearts are often the currency in his songs, and the sound of one breaking is still probably the most powerful one in music, when handled honestly as it is here. Sam also helps his own cause by speaking directly, and simply: ‘Touching you is so confusing’. And if you haven’t had that feeling, you are either very lucky, or very unlucky. And just why is the cello an instrument so suited to the sadness of waking up alone? The rich sob of said stringed beastie seeps through the bedroom window at a couple of points, nicely contrasting Sam’s perfect uncertainty in his voice, and the guitar or piano he’s in conversation with.

There is also that seemingly obligatory country twang in a couple of places, particularly in the homage/tribute to Gram Parsons self-(and others)-destructive nature, GP. The blueprint artist for those who didn’t quite work out fast enough that the pills and booze only fill the emptiness temporarily. But, The Project isn’t all so downbeat, though that dark side is well-wrought. Sam can get downright close to jaunty at times, as in the honest self-consciousness of the sweetly dorky Goofy (‘When it comes to you’) which skips along something like Ben Lee without the pretensions. And that’s got to be a good thing. We – and indeed Sam himself- know this is not going to sell a million copies. In today’s musical world, it is just that bit too quietly honest, yet raw. It’s not loudly proclaiming its personal angst as the central force of the universe – like so many of those American bands with boys in bad shorts. It’s a rarer sound, like that friend who speaks to you without censoring their emotions. If you appreciate that, you’ll appreciate this.

Track Name: Town Where You Were Born
You wake up in the town where you were born.
Friends moved away to find a new life in another place.
But it’s here I remain, I’m in the same town,
I’m in the same place.

And what can you say, when you’re worlds away,
And my day is fading.

I smoked up what was left in my drawer.
But I still had all these feelings I had before.
I know that it’s bad, and I know that it’s sad,
But for one moment I needed something more.

And what can you say, when you’re worlds away,
And my day is fading.

Something is wrong when you don’t want to see,
The sunlight in the trees.
Track Name: Lainie K
She moved to the east,
I stayed in the south.
Although we were apart, she said we’d never part.
But something happened,
And somethings change.
I never saw your face again.

You know that I’ve tried looking for you.
Whenever I was east on that cliff with a view.
Or maybe that is you, reading underneath that tree,
I wonder if you would recognise me.

And I bet that the years have been kind to your face,
And I’ll keep searching for you,
Every moment and in every single place.

The sun came up,
And it went down.
Still you were no where around.
But I hope that you’re happy,
And I hope that you’re well.
And I hope that you still think of me,
And keep searching as well
Track Name: Goofy
Take a walk outside.
You’re confusing me,
I’ve got my pride.
You left me out and you let me down,
You drove my heart into the ground.

I’m so goofy when it comes to you… (repeat 4 times)

I found you,
I found you.
I’ll keep you,
I’ll keep you.
I found you,
You are mine.

Later on inside.
Talk about old times.
The smile which is on my face,
Recalls a time and recalls the the place.

I’m so goofy when it comes to you… (repeat 4 times)

I found you,
I found you.
I’ll keep you,
I’ll keep you.
I found you,
You are mine.

I’m so goofy when it comes to you… (repeat 4 times)

I found you,
I found you.
I’ll keep you,
I’ll keep you.
I found you,

You are mine for all time.

Found you,
I found you.
I keep you,
I keep you.
I found you.
Found you,
I found you.
I keep you,
I keep you.
I found you.
Track Name: Cold Winters Day
In the dark is when I think of you
And all those days we knew
Fall down with laughter.
Surrender everything
For all the joy you bring
That makes you so special.
And I know what you’d say,
On this cold winters day.
I remember what you used to say.

Don’t you think about it?
Don’t you think about it?
Don’t you think about it too?
Like I do.

Touching you is so confusing
I want to feel you when I’m losing
Does that make sense to you?
Everyday is a new horizon,
I really love this life I’m trying
But you could not tell.
And I know what you’d do
If it was all up to you.
I know what you’d say
On this cold winters day.
I remember every single word you say.

Don’t you think about it?
Don’t you think about it?
Don’t you think about it too?
Like I always think of you.

I’ll never forget you.
I’ll always think of you.
Track Name: The Moon and the Stars
I said “Hey,you, climb aboard.
It’s only early and I’m feeling bored”.
And if you’re quick, you can get inside,
My spaceship that leaves at five.
I said “You look really familiar”
You said “That’s ’cause we met last night”
I said “You look really familiar,
will you be my friend tonight?”

And if you need someone to talk to,
Well, I can talk.
And if you need to be held,
I could hold you real well.
But I might melt on the spot.
I might yell out for help.
Don’t panic, do not leave you’re seat.
I could lie here with you for the entire week.
She gave me the moon and the stars,
But she could not give me her heart.
And she took mine with her.

I’ve been around the country and I like what I see.
She said “It’s bad timing,
someone’s flying in here to see me”.
A couple of years too late,
She said “I think it’s fate”.
But fate would not do this to anyone that I know.
So I guess it’s time for me to go.
She gave me the moon and the stars,
But she could not give me her heart.
And she took mine with her…
Track Name: You Better Stop Breaking My Heart
Deep in your heart of hearts,
I know I have no part.
I went walking the other night,
The air was cold, the stars were bright.
You go go about your daily business,
Like nothing matters, like nothing happened
Like I imagined it all up in my head.

I’m sinking like I’ve never sunk,
This is the end it’s not the start
You better stop breaking my heart…
A shout out to all the world,
To all the guys and all the girls.

A rope is for skipping,
Your legs are for tripping
I saw you reaching out for something.
To erase my thoughts, to alter my memory
To give me something so I could forgive you
Because I did not imagine this all up.

I’m sinking like I’ve never sunk,
This is the end it’s not the start
You better stop breaking my heart…
The water is rising but I am low,
Keep it to yourself let no one know
About things I have said and I have done.
Let know one know what I have done.

I’m bleeding like I’ve never bled,
Did you forget what you said?
This is the end it’s not the start,
You better stop breaking my heart.
Track Name: GP
He’d ride from town to town to find a place,
It has to have a wide open sky
So he could stare into space.
With a bottle of blues and a dream,
I’ll turn these memories into songs
And I’ll sing to you what I’ve seen.

And nothing could be better than a big, old house.
With a girl just waiting there for me.

I’d sing to her, a love song that I wrote.
Just to show her that I care…

Whether she’s a waitress, or a dancer,
They’re all pretty to me.
I’m a poet, I’m a singer,
And that’s all I want to be.
I’m so sorry I had to hurt you,
And let go of your hand.
But I’m leader, I’m the king of this rock n roll band.

Standing on this stage doing what I do,
I’m singing a lullaby I wrote just for you.

I sing to you a love song that I wrote,
Just to show you that I care…

In the desert I am home.
And there’s nothing more lonely than feeling alone.
I’m trying,I’m trying to make it somehow,
But each day is getting longer,
Or maybe shorter, I can’t tell.
I’m fading,I’m fading, just like him.
And the pills go down quicker when you’re drinking.
I’m flying, I’m flying up above.
I’m pleased to tell you it’s one big carnival
Of goodness and love.

And nothing could be greater than the great big sky,
That sings to you so sweetly when you die.

So sing to me alove song that you wrote,
Just to show me that you care.
Track Name: House Near Bridge
This ship won’t go any further
And it steers straight if you sing to her.
The lighthouse light is beaming
And it’s watching over me.
This real estate is really in a state,
I’ve tried hard to clean up
This mess of living life,
I’m starting over now.

It’s getting stronger, and now that I’m fonder.
In a house built for you and a brigde built for me,
That takes me to where you are,
It takes me where you are.

And for the seventh time this hour
I am climbing up this tower.
Looking out over the water waiting for the day to pass.
But they’re passing by too quickly,
And my eyes closed as I was blinking.
So when I opened them up the sun went down,
And now I’m headed back to the ground.

It’s getting stronger, and now that I’m fonder.
In a house built for you and a bridge built for me,
That takes me to where you are,
It takes me where you are.

A house near a bridge where two people live.
A house near a bridge where we can live.

It’s getting stronger, and now that I’ve found her
In a house built for you and a bridge built for me,
That takes me to where you are,
It takes me where you are.
Track Name: 747
One brother says to the other
“This town is no good let’s find another
I know that there’s more to this life than I’ve seen.
Let’s move away and chase the dream”.
“Everything here is the same, it’s turning stale.
We’ve got to pack our bags and get away without fail.
I know that there’s more to this life than I’ve seen.
We’ll kiss our mother goodbye,
We’ll leave on a 747 maybe tonight”.

I hope the brothers can work it out. (repeat twice)

I’ve been waiting here for you…
We keep waiting here for you…

“Everything here is the same” he says.
“We’ve got to get away” he says.
“I know that there’s more to this life than I’ve seen”.

We keep waiting here for you.
We can’t wait to hear from you.
Track Name: Moving Along
Went to bed too late,
Woke up in my room.
Flicked on the light it shone way too soon.
Get out of my way,
I’ve got no time.
I’m already late to catch my train on time.
I know you’ve been talking behind my back,

You know that you have a knack for that.
But that’s not fair,
I can’t respond.
I cannot prove I’m not hanging on.
It feels like you’ve been talking about me,
I’m sentimental I know.
You better think of a line,
And think of it fast.
I’m not the same as when you saw me last.
My bullshit detector is really strong,
My friends and my tunes keep me moving along
To a place where I can live my life,
Without those harsh eyes that keep you alive.
The sun is setting,
I’m already forgetting
What it was that kept me guessing
What was it about me that you didn’t like?
Stupid stuff keeps me up at night.
Please stop talking about me.
Let me be sentimental over someone else.
Track Name: Up and Over There
He had something to confess
He was drinking more and eating less
You wake up in another country
And it feels funny and lonely

Now the days are so long
And the nights are too short
I’m looking thriugh my telescope
Searching for my home
I can see you sitting next to me
Smiling by my side
And I know you’re thinking of me tonight.

He looks down from above
Sends me spirit and love
You wake up in another galaxy
But you’re always watching over me

Now the days are so long
And the nights get so cold
I’m looking out my window
Waiting for you to come home
I can see you sitting next to me
Sleeping by my side
And I know you’re thinking of me tonight
I know you’re thinking of me tonight
